EdX-307 is even unsure of the origin of his "personality." (For the record, every robot in the army is very much a machine--though some may talk, it's all programming.) From what he could gather, he was created illegally during the period between 2012 and 2066, when robotics was banned...but he was never activated for one reason or another. Long story short, when the army came to power, they found him, and simply stuck his hard drive in a guard model.
So he lets Katina and Bryan go. He doesn't quite understand what nicknames are yet.
He escorts them back to Birchwood (Katina's hometown) and lets them go entirely when the town comes on the horizon.
It's seen better days, but Katina doesn't know of that time--it was attacked heavily before she was born, and recovery is going frustratingly slow.
I am also really bad at drawing locations. The gist of Birchwood is that it seems like a tiny rural village until one sees the massive ruins surrounding it, hinting at it once being much greater.
