Retrospective, Day 3
Hoo boy. This is a big one. Apocrypha Seven, the first thing I posted on dA after Reflection started getting dusty, and I think it's the first real story my watchers got interested in. I mean yeah, I posted stories here and there, but they were all written and hardly anyone read them, so hardly anyone was into them.
It was trying very, very hard to be cartoony, and it failed so hard. I quickly gave them their noses back. I love noses too much.
What Apc7 tried to do with its style was have bendy limbs and funny noses and whatever but since I was so amateur at the time it just looks lazy. However since it stayed on dA so long it enjoyed constant revamping.
But perhaps more could be said of its story. The main thing about Apc7's story is that it has a seven deadly sins theme through its countries and powers, and that the main character is essentially working for the villains.
Sounds good enough, but the way they went about it was too stereotypical. They went along creating disasters in every country (most of them horribly unrealistic) to get a MacGuffin gem (Paper Mario? Sonic?) that turned out to unleash an ancient evil (every JRPG ever?) in the end out of nowhere.
This all bugs me equally. I don't want any of those elements anymore--Apc7 could come back, but its entire plot needs a good dose of revamp.
However, what I did like was the characters. They were all technically the villains, sure, but they all had their different reasons for being there (kind of like the villains in II!). It's kind of like how RR was revamped; the ideas and characters are okay, but the plot needs tweaks.
There's also a thing of game mechanics...if this is to be an RPG, I hate it when people can switch out party members because that promotes favoritism, but I don't want seven characters on the battlefield at once...
Who knows. It's slowly making its way back at any rate. I've gotten some ideas from older stories of mine, and I know a way to spice up the core plot, but it just needs a push for better execution now.
Someday, Apc7. Someday.
If you worry about favouritism, you could always have the player forced to use each character every so often either through story line based (e.g party splits up) or a counter that kicks them out of the party after x battles. :V
ReplyDeleteThe latter would be annoying and the former wouldn't be flexible in the possibility that you might not make it a game.
