Got two refs done! New shading style, too.
For comparison:
The first is rather "newb"-ish shading. White and black made transparent over the colors. It gives a dull, zombie-like appearance, especially on hair and skin.
The middle is what I've always tended to do--shading that's based on the same hue but still made vibrant, darkening each color individually. It makes it look warmer.
The last is a color experiment, shading with different hues instead. It's often used in sprites to help make them pop, and it does. It's not "realistic," but it makes the colors more dynamic.
I'll probably shade like this more often.
